Canada: Canadian Northern Railway, c.1910. Notes: Framed in an original wooden frame. RMS Royal Edward was a fast luxury ocean liner and mail steamer operated by the Canadian Northern Steamship Company under its Royal Line brand before being sunk as a troopship in World War I.
It was built in 1907 as the RMS Cairo in Govan, Scotland, for the Egyptian Mail Steamship Company. The ship was purchased in 1910 by the Toronto-based Canadian Northern Railway subsidiary, Canadian Northern Steamships, and renamed Royal Edward (along with sister ship Heliopolis becoming Royal George). It was requisitioned as a British troop transport ship (HMT Royal Edward) in 1914 at the start of the First World War.
