with its many bridges and the Ile de la Cité. On either side of the Avenue des Champs-Elysées are the Cirque d'Eté, also known as the Cirque de
l'Impératrice, built by the architect Jacques Hittorf in 1841, and the Palais de l'Industrie, built by the architect Jean-Marie-Victor Viel and the
engineer Alexis Barrault for the 1855 Universal Exhibition. These two buildings were demolished towards the end of the 19th century, the second
