Das Jnnere Einer Sinagoge In Rom

Karlsruhe: Velten, c. 1823. Notes: A lithograph showing the interior of a Jewish Synagogue in Rome during the early 19th century.

Hess paints a lively scene of Jews attending services in Rome’s main Synagogue, the Tempio Italiano. In the synagogue the crowd is sufficiently at home in their environment that they casually ignore the official proceedings, preferring instead to converse among themselves while children play boisterously among the pews.

This in contrast to another work of Hess's that was published in the same year which shows a scene at a Church in Rome where a priest is trying desperately to preach the gospel to a Jewish audience who are sitting, politely bored and indifferent.

Hieronymus Hess (1799 - 1850) was a Swiss illustrator and painter during the first half of the 19th century. Hess’s perceptive compositions achieve a high level of social satire and are among his most well-known works.
