Notes: A striking print of the 2 varsity crew's in readiness for the annual "Boat Race", rowed between the competing "eights" of the Oxford University Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club. The race was first held on the River Thames at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire in 1829, from 1856 onward, the race has been held annually (excepting the years covering the 2 World Wars). There have been 3 different courses rowed over the years, however, the present course is just over 4 miles (6km) long, and is rowed between Putney and Mortlake in south west London each spring.
