The Cloth Hall, Ypres
England: The Medici Modern Art Society, c. 1918. Notes: A scene from Belgium during the First World War. It shows the brutal devastation of the German attack on the city after the 5th battle of Ypres.
The painting shows much of the famous and unique architecture of the city in ruins. The only buildings that remained somewhat intact were the Cloth Hall and the Cathedral. Most of the Hall was rebuilt. However one of the wings was left barren and its original pillars were restored and left standing to serve as a war memorial.
Before its destruction, the Cloth Hall was considered to be one of the greatest examples of medieval architecture in northern Europe. Originally built by wealthy Flemish cloth guilds, the Hall was a wonderful example of Gothic civic architecture.
James Kerr-Lawson (1865-1939) was a Canadian painter during the late 19th and early 20th century. He was well established when he was commissioned by the Canadian government to go to Europe and paint scenes of the war. , Image Size : 400x540 (mm), 15.75x21.26 (Inches), Platemark Size : , Paper Size : 635x765 (mm), 25.00x30.12 (Inches), Coloring: Printed in Color, Medium: Offset Lithograph, Categories: Military Canadian; Military World War I & II; Views Europe Benelux;.
