He almost single-handedly created and popularized the neoclassical style.

Most know Piranesi for his two series: Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome) and Carceri (Prisons). However, his work in Trofeo o sia Magnifica Colonna are considered to be, amongst many in the world of collecting, his greatest accomplishment. This particular column was created to galvanize and honor the victories and memory of the 2nd century Emperor of Rome, Marcus Aurelius during the Danubian wars. The column itself is believed to have been erected circa 193 A.D..
