At age 18, William enrolled at the National Academy of Design in Manhattan, and through his studies found himself inspired by European Neoclassical artists, such as Hogarth and other Dutch masters. After his formal education, Mount divided his time between New York City, becoming integrated within its art community, and Long Island. Throughout his career, Mount continued to study art, and he acquired a sizeable library on the subject. Through his scholarship on the subject he absorbed the great European artistic traditions, and this had a profound impact on the quality of his representations.
