Paris. c. 1804. Notes: A fine dark impression of the title page to the second volume of the ruins of Pompei by Piranesi entitled Antiquités de Pompeïa or Antiquités de la grande Grèce.

Francesco Piranesi was born in 1759, he brought to a triumphal conclusion a number of his father’s incomplete or projected works, including the Paestum etchings, plans of Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli, and of Pompeii, as well as a survey of the Emissario del Fucino. He also added further plates to various works including the Vedute di Roma and the Trofei di Ottaviano Augusto, and brought out an expanded edition of the Antichita Romane in 1784… Francesco also initiated a number of substantial works on art and archaeology, such as the Raccolta de’Tempi Antichi (1781/1790), Il Teatro di Ercolano (1783), Monumneti degli Scipioni (1785) and the Collection des plus belles statues (1786).
