"While investigating the Emissarium of Lake Albano, Piranesi devoted considerable attention to other antiquities nearby, particularly a couple of caves with ornamental interiors created by the Romans. These were illustrated with customary thoroughness in a kind of appendix to the Emissarium publication. In an accompanying essay on Roman nymphaea the artist conjectured that these particular examples were used for the orgies of Clodius, which had been denounced by Cicero."
