This fine work of Italian copper engravings on the architecture of modern Rome is cited by Cicognara as: "Questo è uno de migliori libri delle vedute die Roma che rende un idea adeguata de' luoghi, e de' monumenti", holding it in great esteem as one of the best books of views of Rome. Fowler states: “In Italy, up to this time, there had been no extensive and systematic attempt to record contemporary Renaissance architecture ...; he also states: [Falda's] “work, aside from its historical value, is of special interest in showing the development in Italy of the realistic approach to architectural representation” and “all the copies examined vary slightly in the number and arrangement of the plates.”. Thieme writes: "Die zahlreichen Blätter Faldas sind nicht nur für die Topographie und Geschichte der Stadt Rom wichtig, sondern auch künstlerisch anziehend"; he deemes Falda's engravings not only important for the topography and history of the city of Rome but also artistically attractive. This set is a rare first edition of the three-part series of copperplates of views before its numbering. The plates contained in the first edition, of course, apart from titles and dedications, were arranged as follows: part I had 33 plates; part II, 15; part III, 34; another reference attributes 36 to part III. Later extended, 1699 and 1739, editions were often bound with a fourth or fifth part; these were published following Falda’s passing and included Vasi’s engravings. Parts I and II were both published in the year 1665; part III was published in 1669.
