M. Schmueck, 1591&1594. Edition: First Edition. , Binding: Contemporary, panelled, brown calf; blind embossed, with cornice fleur-des lys and decorative oval centre-pieces whereby the upper boards bear the coat of arms of Sachsen and the lower ones each an attractive ornamental design; boards are dated; spine raised with five blind bands; gilt lettered title on morocco label on two; compartments with central floral design and horizontal gilt fillets bordering to bands. All edges blue. , Notes: The German author, Protestant reformer, historian and theologian, Cyriacus Spangenberg (1528–1604), generated approximately one hundred fifty (150) historical and theological works, among these, the treatise "Adels Spiegel", which deals with the subject of nobility of his time, their spheres of influence - both materially and morally -, their potential strengths and weaknesses. During his time in Wittenberg, he was a student and fellow tenant of Martin Lutherg; among Luther's last students, Spangenberg counts as one of and perhaps the most prominent. The embossed covers point to tools used in the workshop of the Saxony court bookbinders of the 16th century, Jacob Krause and his student Caspar Meuser, who took over the workshop of his teacher in 1587. Both volumes are rarely seen as the second volume is usually lacking: Ebert states about the work: "Very rare and useful"; Graesse writes: "Le seconde volume manque ordinairement". , Size: Folio (295x190mm), Illustration: Text in German.
Illustrated with two titles in black and red, one for each volume: the first with one large woodcut vignette; the second depicting two, side-by-side woodcut vignettes. Moreover, the colophon of volume 1 depicts a large woodcut of Schmueck’s device. Volume one contains thirty-seven (37) further in-text woodcut engavings; both volumes with numerous ornamental initial woodcuts of varying sizes at openings. , Volume: Two volumes. , Provenance: Initial ‘s’ embossed on lower margins of titles. , References: VD16 S 7472-3; Ebert 21563; Graesse VI, 457; Goedeke 194, 95a. , Pages: Ll: volI: bl., )1- 6, )(1-6 nn, A1- Hhhh6 or Colophon, bl.; volII: bl., )1- 5, bl., A1-Mmmm6, Nnnn1-4, Oooo1-7, bl.., Category: Book Europe Germany; Book Early Printed 1500;.
