This is one of the best, and one of the earliest, general historical works of Canada through observations. It spans 1477 to 1736 and describes French colonies in Canada as well as Acadia, the New World, Mississippi valley and Louisiana. Volume 2 is dedicated to natural history, together with maps by Bellin, showing discoveries in North America. It is held in such high regard that the historian Lande wrote, "This work is one of the best authorities concerning various Indian tribes, some of which no longer exist. The laborious accuracy with which the work was executed can be estimated by the fact that the maps, dated 1743, are marked with the latest discoveries, in 1742, in the extreme north of America."
