He was appointed in 1913 as the first physician for psychological medicine at University College Hospital. At the beginning of W.W.I he joined the RAMC with the rank of major and served as lecturer in mental disease at Moss Side Military Hospital, Maghull, where veterans with shell-shock were treated. He was also physician to the Special Neurological Hospital for Officers at 10 Palace Green, Kensington, West London, as well as psychiatric consultant to other military hospitals in London. After the end of WWI, he returned to University College Hospital and also joined the staff of the National Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System including Paralysis and Epilepsy. Upon the founding of The Journal of Neurology and Psychopathology in 1920, he was one of the nine members of the editorial committee, headed by Samuel Alexander Kinnier Wilson.
