He studied theology at the University of Tübingen (ministry exam,1845). He was also interested in natural sciences, and while a student at Tübingen was influenced by geologist Friedrich August von Quenstedt. In 1854 he was named curator of the department of mineralogy and palaeontology at the Royal Wurttemberg Museum of natural history in Stuttgart.

An attractive and interesting presentation of contemporary geological theory. An interesting aspect of the 4 chromolithograph diagrams is the depiction of titled layers of Silurian and Devonian rock which have been reverse faulted and pushed up over the younger layers at the edge of the ocean.
