Item #B5879 Microcosm of London. RUDOLF ACKERMANN, Thomas Rowlandson, W H. Pyne, William Combe.

Microcosm of London.

[London]: T. Bensley for R. Ackermann, [c. 1808-1810]. Edition: FIRST EDITION , Binding: Half crushed crimson levant morocco, gilt tooled, gilt decorated and titled spine, a.e.g. by L. Broca. , Notes: Originally issued in parts, as with most sets, this copy has mixed states of the plates but most are in the first state.
One of the most famous colour plate books showing the scenes of London from the early 19th century. Tooley considers this “one of the great colour plate books” and that it “should form the corner stone of any collection of books on the subject,” arguing that the plates “present an unrivaled picture of London in early 19th century, of historic value, as many of the buildings no longer exist.” The architecture of each plate was drawn by Rowlandson – the finest English architecture painter of the time – and the people and still life added in by Augustus Pugin. The first two volumes were written by William Henry Pyne, who handed it over to William Combe for the third volume – all of which focused primarily on the history of the city rather than its aesthetics (Adams).
, Size: Quarto (338 x 272 mm). , Illustration: Illustrated with wood-engraved titles within architectural background, engraved dedication leaves, and 104 hand-colored aquatint plates by Bluck, Stadler, Hill and Sutherland after Rowlandson and Pugin. , Volume: three volumes, References: Abbey Scenery 212; Tooley 7; Adams 99; Martin Hardie, pp. 100-103; Prideaux, pp. 121-124 and 348., Pages: [4], iv, 231; [2], vi, [2], 239; [2], iv, [2], 280, 6 pp, , Category: Book Art, Architecture & Design; Book Plate Books Colour; Book Europe United Kingdom;.
