Considered as the authoritative scholar on early Arabic poetry, Ahlwardt’s has maintained his importance over the years since the original printing of this work. Wilhelm Theodor Ahlwardt (1828-1909) was born into an intellectual family, being the son of famous philologist Wilhelm Christian Ahlwardt. He studied oriental languages, first at Greifswald, then Göttingen, and futher Arabic languages at the Sorbonne in Paris. Employed as a librarian in Gotha and Paris, he eventually became a ‘Privatdozent’ at Greifswald University, teaching and writing several important works on Arabic poetry. With imprint on the Arabic title: Ġraifizwald [Greifswald] 1869.
