Le Jour de Gloire.
Bad Homburg and Frankfurt am Main: Gulliver-Presse, Bayerle & Jaeger, publisher, Bad Homburg, c. 1964. Edition: First and Limited edition, Nr. 19 of 25; signed by, Binding: Contemporary, black, half cloth with red marbled boards and matching contemporary blue marbled pasted and free endpapers. , Notes: On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the French Revolution, Walter Richartz’ “Le Jour de Gloire” was published in 1964. This is exemplar 19 of a limited edition of 25, hand-printed by the artist and signed by both author and artist. A closing printer’s note states: “Die Xylomontagen wurden für dieses Buch angefertigt, von Walter Zimbrich auf der Handpresse gedruckt und nach Drucklegung vernichtet” translated: ”The xylomontages were made for this book, printed by Walter Zimbrich on the hand press and destroyed after printing”. All illustrations were created by Walter Zimbrich, whereby in this work, author and illustrator influenced one another. The author, Richartz, used the opportunity to express in critical text his mistrust and misgivings of the use of force, even when it appears legitimate for political purposes. Parallel to the artful description of the French Revolution with its atrocities and violations of power, there is a chain of allusions to scientific and technical progress advancing rapidly in parallel during this time woven into the text. The hot air balloon, for example, an invention, and electricity, a discovery of this period, would be experimented with; both are given detailed attention. A scene on electricity, for instance, connects itself to another scene showing the queen taking her last steps toward the guillotine; again this event is directly placed just prior to the closing picture - the new invention, the hot-air balloon quietly rising up westwards. Text in German
