This book shows scenes from the Crimean War and is interesting both from the point of view of military history (as it shows plans of battles fought, depictions of the fortifications, camps etc.), and for large tables depicting landscapes and scenes of the theater of war.

The Crimean War (October 1853 – February 1856) was a conflict in which Russia lost to an alliance of France, Britain, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia. The immediate cause involved the rights of Christian minorities in the Holy Land, which was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. The French promoted the rights of Catholics, while Russia promoted those of the Orthodox Christians. The longer-term causes involved the decline of the Ottoman Empire, and the unwillingness of Britain and France to allow Russia to gain territory and power at Ottoman expense

The Sardininan-Piedmont (the predecessor to modern day Italy) contribution to the allies in the Crimea was part of the Prime Minister’s, Camillo Cavour, diplomatic plan to secure French support for the notion of a united Italy, the success of which resulted in the Austro-French war of 1859.
