J.B. Bouillon-Lagrange, a French chemist and pharmacist, was born in Paris on July 12th, 1774. He enjoyed a prominent career in both disciplines before being employed by Napoleon himself as a military pharmacist. After participating in some of the Napoleonic campaigns, he obtained a doctorate in medicine from Strasbourg. Following this, along with other prominent positions held at schools and academic societies, he became Empress Josephine’s doctor and pharmacist. When Napoleon divorced Josephine in 1810, Lagrange refused to give her up as a patient, and thus lost his position at court. He continued teaching chemistry, publishing, and practicing medicine until his death in 1844. (Société d’histoire de la pharmacie)
