This is a very detailed depiction of the geography and ethnography of the South East Asian islands. The three volumes form part of a larger multi-volume work, first published in French called “L’universe pittoresque”. These three volumes form the complete section on Southeast Asia and Oceania. De Rienzy (1759-1844) was a traveler in the Orient and Oceania, and was a scholar, geographer, member of government and of the French, English, and Italian academies. Chadenat writes that the text and profuse illustrations contain important historical and ethnographical details with regards to the South East Asian islands at the time of publication. Hill lauds the work, indicating that Rienzi “gathered a particularly important collection of material on Malaysia, Micronesia, Polynesia, and Melanesia. The work contains a thorough discussion of the area’s peoples, natural history, geography, and commerce, as well as the history of its exploration….
